Scandinavian Bride Cultures

Scandinavian Bride Cultures

When you are getting married in Scandinavia, it’s important to pay attention to some of the quirkier traditions. We asked ceremony organizer Mariella Gink to give us the dirt on some of Sweden’s distinctive traditions.

Before marriages in Viking instances, the bride did take a bath to cleanse herself and spiritually wash apart her female. Then she would leap into chilly waters to reflect the move into femininity. Her hair was even a big deal. She would sew it into elaborate tresses to symbolize her sexuality, and the more complex her locks were, the better it boded for the partners. The men did use a blouse and shorts made of wool or cloth. They had also carry their swords.

In Norse lifestyle, it was common for couples to give each of their visitors home with donations. This is a custom that carries on today. It is common to see a product registry at Swedish weddings, but it’s not the norm to acquire massive monetary contributions, as most people can afford to get themselves a provide.

After the ceremony, it’s time to observe! Swedish weddings are known for their extended, elaborate dinner factions. The evening might involve from eight to 12 speeches, examinations of films from the bachelor and bachelorette parties, games and songs. A friend of the couple is usually designated master of ceremonies to coordinate all the entertainment.

Another quirky Scandinavian wedding tradition is that whenever the groom or bride leaves a room for any reason, other men iceland brides will line up to kiss them. This is one of our favorite things to capture on camera as a photographer because it’s so funny!
